The Siege of Saguntum was the first battle of the Second Punic War. Hannibal besieged Rome’s ally: Saguntum. It was a message to Rome that Hannibal was serious about getting Rome out of Carthage’s sphere of influence on their southern side of the Ebro River. Rome violated their agreement to stay on their northern side, and Saguntum was on the south.
